MERVEX

MERVEX research group has been created to strengthening, at the "Instituto Español de Oceanografía" (IEO), the research related to the fishery resource assessment. The assessment is the process through which the consequences of different alternatives for management fishery resources are assessed (for example, catch or effort levels, closures, net sizes, etc). This process requires the combination of several research lines ranging from monitoring the activity of the fleet and model design, up to the evaluation of management strategies. Therefore, MERVEX participates in the following research lines.

  • Improvement of knowledge about the information of fleet activity.
  • Biology of exploited and non target marine species.
  • Dynamics of exploited populations.
  • Oceanographic surveys as a calibration tool for abundance in the models.
  • Development and application of predictive models that combine the dynamics of the stocks and the fleet activity calibrated using the results of the surveys.
  • Application of these models to the assessment of alternative management measures taking into account the uncertainty of the system.
  • Ecology of exploited populations taking into account environmental interactions, trophic relations, impact on the environment, etc and developing useful indicators for assessing the impact of fishing on it.
  • Development of models and indicators for the integrated assessment of marine ecosystems.
  • Development of models to quantify the social and economic impact of different fishery management measures, through the collaboration among the different organizations involved (industry, NGOs and politicians).
MERVEX participates in competitive projects of national and internacional scope financed by "Xunta de Galicia. Consellería de Economía, Emprego y Industria", "Axencia de Innovación (Gain)", "Instituto Español de Oceanografía", Ministry of Science and Innovation, State Research Agency, and European Social Fund. Below, the current research projects of Mervex are presented.

We try to summarise all the above in the following video where we give a quick overview of the main objectives, research lines and main activities of the MERVEX group. Note that the original version is in Spanish, but subtitles are available in Spanish, Galician and English. Take a look at it!.

Course on "Fundamentals in Statistics" by Valentín Trujillo: In order to expand the training provided by and for the GRC-MERVEX, a course on "Fundamentals in Statistics" is available, which addresses the conceptual aspects on which statistical knowledge is based. Although the program seems to be standard, the development of the program and its content presented here, gives an approach that could be described as particular. Information available on: Link.

Members

MERVEX is a relatively new group (created in 2012) that supports the traditional advisory activity of the IEO through integrated fishery research. MERVEX integrates researchers from the Oceanographic Centers of Santander, A Coruña, Vigo and Cádiz to cover all the fisheries of interest to Spain in waters of the Northeast Atlantic in the ICES area. Although given the importance of fishing activity in Galicia, the Galician Oceanographic Centers are the ones that provide the large number of researchers.
Below, basic information of the members is shown (emails, social networks, etc.), further information of group organization and team composition can be found here.
