Objectives

EVALICES has the following objectives:

  • Encourage the creation of a homogeneous and competing team in evaluation that allows meeting the requirements and challenges of both basic and scientific-technical research applied to the management of exploited populations and their ecosystem.

  • Evaluate the different living resources of interest to Spanish fleets operating in the ICES area, preparing and recommending the appropriate management measures for their rational exploitation, taking into account the ecosystem approach, the precautionary principle and the objective of Maximum Sustainable Yield . The following species / stocks are considered resources of interest and are subject to evaluation:

    • Merluccius merluccius (North and South Stock).

    • Sardina pilchardus (Areas 8c and 9a ICES).

    • Engraulis encrasicolus (Areas 8a, b, c and 9a ICES).

    • Lophius piscatorius and L. budegassa (North and South Stock).

    • Lepidorhombus boscii and L. wiffiagonis (North and South Stock).

    • Nephrops norvegicus (Functional Units 16 (Porcupine), 25 (Galicia North), 26- 27 (Galicia West and North of Portugal), 31 (Cantabrian) and 30 (Gulf of Cádiz).

    • Scomber scombrus.

    • Trachurus trachurus (West and South Stock).

    • Micromesistius poutassou.

    • Depth Species; Pagellus bogaraveo, Molva molva, Molva dypterigia, Brosme brosme, Argentina silus, Hoplostethus mediterraneus, Aphanopus carbo, Phycis blennoides, Berix splendes and Lepidotus caudatus.

    • Octopus vulgaris, Sepia officinalis and Loligo sp (L. vulgarus y L. forbesii).

    • R. brachyura; R. montagui; R. santiaguesa; R. mosaica and Scyliorhinus canicula, Galeus melastomus o Mustelus asterias.

    • New species (species included in the evaluation and in the scientific recommendation) Solea solea, Pollachius pollachius, Merlangus merlangus and Pleuronectes platessa.

    • Other species, species for which data is collected: Scomber colias, Trachurus mediterraneus, Trachurus picturatus and Capros aper.

    • Protected, endangered and threatened species subject to accidental capture (mammals, birds, turtles, etc).

  • Contribute with our information and experience to the design, implementation and monitoring of management plans and measures.

  • Develop methodologies to address the new evaluation challenges, species with little information, mixed fisheries, multi-species fisheries and environmental interactions.

  • Contribute to the development of the European Marine Strategy by defining and calculating the descriptors and indicators and as well as the elaboration of plans, that are related to the assessment of commercial exploited resources and their impact on marine ecosystems.

  • Disseminate the results of the evaluations and investigations carried out between the scientific, political, sectorial community and citizens.
